Chosing your espresso Grinder
You will need a grinder that is made for Espresso. Picking up a Krups or whatever household appliance name for 50 $ at the local hardware store won’t cut it, and it will soon be collecting dust in the attic.
The reason for this is, that grinders used for Espresso needs to be able to grind very fine, and they need to be consistent in grind and accurate in adjustments.
Cheaper grinders are none of the above. They grind the coffee yes, but inconsistently, so if you grind with them, you will have varying grind coarseness, meaning some of the coffee will be course, some will be medium and some will be powder all in one grind. This will prove to make it a nightmare adjusting the grind to have a proper extraction for the beans you are using, and you will always have sludge in your cup due to the fine powder they produce. You will have even more problems if you use a couple different coffee beans that needs different grind levels, because they are inaccurate. You can set them to say 10 for one coffee, then 8 for another, then back to 10, and the 10 from last time will be wildly off. Most of them will also not be able to even approach the fine grinds needed for Espresso, or they will choke as soon as the beans are a little oily and you will have to poke around in the coffee chute to unclog them constantly, spilling coffee all over.
What you want us what’s called a burr grinder. The best and most commonly used budget grinder that really works is the Rancilio rocky. The Rocky is a fine piece of machine that will serve you well for ages.
Moving up from the Rocky we have grinders such as the Macap M4 or the Mazzer Mini, top of the line, and so is the price.
The reason for the higher price on these machines are extreme grind precision and step-less grind settings. The Rocky is great, but if you are a real coffee geek you may want to adjust your grind setting in between 2 settings on the Rocky, and that’s where you’d want to pay the extra cash for something like a Mazzer Mini.
